The .LATINO extension opened its sunrise period from 12 May to 11 June 2026 — and it is unlike most new gTLDs. Rather than designating a territory or a sector, it embodies a transnational cultural identity spanning Latin America, Spanish-speaking regions and diaspora communities across several continents. The article examines what this ambiguous scope means for brand owners: an extension that is neither strictly geographic nor sectoral multiplies the risks of registrations suggesting a false affiliation with Latin cultural markets. Trademark holders enrolled with the Trademark Clearinghouse benefit from priority registration, and rights holders are advised to monitor not only direct reproductions of their marks but also combinations evoking the Latino universe. Beyond the legal analysis, the article reads .LATINO as a sign of a broader evolution: new gTLDs increasingly function as symbolic digital spaces embodying communities and identities.
