Unstoppable Domains, which created alternative extensions such as .COIN and .WALLET, announced on 18 October 2022 that it was abandoning .COIN after discovering that Emercoin had established the same extension before it. A costly gesture, but a calculated one: by respecting the first-mover principle where it is second, Unstoppable Domains strengthens its position in the dispute with Handshake over .WALLET, where it claims priority — while signalling its consistency to any future judge. The word “wallet”, descriptive, cannot be appropriated as a trademark, so priority of use becomes the decisive argument. The .WALLET extension, far more valuable commercially than .COIN, is worth the trade-off: a strategy of concession serving a larger claim.
